The idea for the team was formed in the Cave Rock hotel over a beer by Kevin, Tony McKendry, Lee Brown, John Monk etc about 1987. These guys all played for Sumner Suburban Cricket Assoc teams but as there was no equivalent "Old Mans" grade in CSCA so they applied with the SCC permission to join the CCA grade & were granted permission.

In the 1st 5 years or so the team was competitive & usually finished in the top 3 or 4 places in the competition. Also we had a very good social life & most Saturdays after the game as well as the compulsory beers at the club house of the team we played against, if it was an away game, it was always back to Sumner after. We had an annual tennis competition to finish off the season famously hosted by Malcolm & Joan Corbett (who had a grass tennis court). The tournament would start about 1.00am & often finished in the dark & if the games didn't finish in the dark the prize giving certainly did.

As time went by quite a few of the regulars stopped playing for various reasons( often just getting older) & we struggled to get numbers but carried on playing thanks to a lot of wring ins. About this same time Dave Boreham started the Sumner Misfits.(The original team had just been called the Sumner Presidents.) After a few years of competition in Presidents grade against each other the 2 teams joined forces as both were struggling for numbers.

Over the past couple of years the team spirit has rallied along with the amount of beer after the game .... which of course leads to greater player numbers. The team is really looking forward to carrying on the success we ended with last year.

Game 18 - Riccarton

Once again we were at Hospital corner but on a much better day than last week. They put themselves into bat and made us field with 9 players. Hence they got off to a great start and kept the scoring rate cracking along. In the end they got to 220. But the highlight of the innings was the dropped catch from Gary Hooper. After stating last week that he never drops catches it was god to see he was human too. and that put a smile on everyones face.

Gary Hooper made 40 in the chase and supported by a number of players. We gave them a bit of a scare with a couple of 6's to Mckendry near the end making it a close contest. We got to 209 and we were happy with that against a team stacked with talent.

Well thats the last game of the season so will see everyone at the end of year function. On the 17th . Cheers.

Game 17 - St Albans

Horrible chilly day and at Hospital corner to boot. They batted first and made an impressive 230-3. We wernt in the running and all attempted to score fast runs near the end.
All out for 88 Gormack made 23 the rest.... did not score that many.

Game 16 - Lancaster Park

Batting first we made 190 for 9. Dave Boreham made a typically brutal 50 and Dave McConnell showed his class by grabbing 69. We had a bit of a collapse after that but thought not a bad score.

But it wasnt to be enough and they got the runs reasonably easily only 4 down. Steve Ridley got 2 wickets.

Game 15 - Marist

Finally something good to talk about..... a win. We had our lucky player Matt Harris again so we were confident.

Quite a good solid start from our top order with Hooper 19, McConnell 30, Liken 52 and Boreham 24 all making starts. Craig Liken especially responsible for getting us to a good score of 172/9. We had a great start in the field getting rid of the top order quickly thanks to Dave Boreham who claimed three wickets. Wickets kept falling and when they were 7 down we thought it would be an easy win. We didnt realise that there big hitters had been held back and they gave us quite a scare, hitting 4's and 6's with crisp hits. Thankfully we still managed to eventually get them out and wrap up the win. McConnell grabbing 4 wickets and Dave Miller 2. They were all out for 136

Game 14 - Burnside

Quick rundown this week. We batted first...... again. Bruce again made a solid start to the innings with 47 but then everyone else struggled apart from Paul Otway who was solid as usual with 22*. We struggled to 106/7. They got the runs easily enough. Hooper and Mckendry got two wickets each.

Game 13 - Hospital

They batted first and made a pretty good score on a tricky pitch (every week seems to be tricky) The wickets were spread around with McConnell getting a couple. They got to 224 for 6 in their 40 overs.

Welcoming back Bruce Buckner he made a sold 54 runs and McConnell 27 ,Steve Ridley 20 and Paul Otway 27* made starts. We couldnt keep up with the run rate but at least everyone got a bat. We ended up on 154/9. So not really in the game at all. Never mind

Game 12 - East Shirley Blue

Well we beat them in the first round so we hoped we could do the same this day. Got off to a bad start even before the game got underway as we only had 10 players. We were also missing a few of our regular bowlers too.

We lost the toss and got put into the field first. Their openers looked quite good and were reasonably aggressive but thankfully they didn't last long and all of our bowlers did really well under the tough conditions. Special mention to two of our bowlers who had outstanding figures, Gary Hooper 8overs 3 wickets for 9 runs. Pretty good considering his first ball went for 4. And also great figures for Dave Miller who had his best bowling of the year, 8 overs 3 wickets for 17. They managed to limp to 134 before being all out.

In reply we had a very solid start, Bruce Buckner played very well for his 27, Gary Hooper made another agressive start with 29. But our best batsman this season Dave McConnell prooved again why he was top sportsman of the year last season by playing a commanding 61 not out and leading us to a safe victory with only 3 wickets down.

So now we are back on track we can look forward to many more wins. Ohhh and Matt Harris was back and must be the teams lucky charm.

Game 11 - East Shirley Gold

Playing another strong team we knew this weeks game was going to be tough.
We were sent in to bat first up and made a reasonable start with a re-jigged batting lineup. Steve Ridley made a strong 19 and Dave McConnell a good 22. We lost a few quick wickets and thought a collapse might be the case. But Nick Gormack (73) showed some nice hitting and with Gareth Hammond (26) put a 100 run partnership. We got to 167 for 7 and thought that might be competitive given the pitch had a few interesting weeds.

The team did really well in the field and got a wicket in the first over, then a steady fall of wickets made us consider we could win. But a couple of their batsmen played nice controlled innings to lead them to victory but not before they at least sweated for a bit. They were 7 down when they got the runs with an over or two to spare. A few injuries have us concerned especially to Steve Booth. Fingers crossed will make a speedy recovery.

17th Jan - Tenth Game - Old Boy's
Well was always going to be a hard day... and we wernt dissapointed. Playing a team stacked with talent they chose to bat first. They were very aggressive with the bat and peppered the short Barnett park boundary. We thought once we got there top order out we could contain them. Unfortunately they had a couple of secret weapons. Warren Wisneski took the scoring to a new level and his aggressive style hurt our bowlers badly. Supported by a couple of good supporting innings we thought that 300 would be a score we would have to chase. But a great catch by Dave Miller got rid of Wisnski and then Dave McConnell took 4 wickets to slow things down. In the end they got 278/7 but could have been worse.

Our batting never really got underway as their bowling effort was almost as good as there batting. Best score was McConnell with 28. no one else really got going. We were all out for 125.

At least we only have to play that team once this year.... but im sure they will be a hard team to dislodge from the top. Well done Old Boy's you played very well but also with commendable conduct.

20th December - rain
Lots of rain. bring on the new year.

13th December - Ninth Game - Riccarton
Worse than the previous game im afraid. Again only Dave Boreham got us above 100. He scored a good 34 runs on a tough day. We got 106.... all out. oh dear.

They once again got the runs without much effort. Mcconell and hooper got the only two wickets. We may need a secret weapon... When is Matt coming back from Germany????

6th December - Eighth Game - St Albans
Hmmmmm never really in the game im afraid batted first and only Dave Boreham (41) saved us from getting under a hundred. Hes turning into the teams reliable sorce of runs with his unusual style and good eye. we reached 126 for 9. No enough really.

Struggled in the field Steve Ridley got the only wicket. They got the runs without much trouble and only one down.

29th November - 7th Game - Lancaster park
Against the top of the table team and struggling for players (one decided to go gardening instead and only told the team an hour before - tut tut), we knew we were up against it. But we started very strongly when we batted first. Hooper (26) Buckner (29) McConnell (66) got us off to a cracking start. Peppering the boundaries. Then in the later stages Craig Liken (26) and Boreham (32*) got us to a very respectable score of 229 for 7. Shot of the day came from Liken with a fantastic straight drive which even left Dave McConnell impressed (high praise).

Then our turn to bowl came. Julian marsh got the first wicket after Gary Hooper took the catch of the year so far. Diving to his left one handed and in mid air. Unfortunately thats the highlight of the bowling effort. Just couldnt remove the next batsmen before alot of damage had been done. Half way through the innings we were still ahead but with wickets in hand they just kept scoring runs. Our fielding was a little ragged but everyone tried the best they could and cant fault that. Boreham took a nice caught and bowled and Julian Marsh took three wickets. Close but not quite. Next time.

22nd November - 6th Game
Umm cant remember who we played this week as no one wrote it in the book (harewood?). Never mind.

We batted first at Barnett park on a pretty tricky pitch to score runs from. Steve Booth top scored with 46 and then there were helpful contributions from Gormack (13), Hammond (13), and Walsh (19). We ended up on 150 for 7 and thought that it wasnt too bad of a score.

We did our best in the field but there top order was quite consistant and couldn't get them out. In the end they got the runs easily enough and only 6 down. Walsh and McConnell took two wickets each.

15th November - A Bye this week
.................

8th November - Fifth Game - Sydenham
They batted first on what turned our to be a chilly day. Couldnt really make any headway into their batting lineup and it wasnt untill the last few overs that they really cut loose. The reached 195 for three. Wicket takers Julian Marsh 1 for 38, Ross Gunn 1 for 36, and Hammond 1 for 26 (off 4 overs).

. We thought it was a gettable score but no matter how hard the ball was hit always struggled to get to the boundary and the pitch was especially tricky to bat on. Their slow bowlers were perfect for the pitch and in the end we could only get 140 for 4. Never mind.

1st November - Fourth Game - Burnside
Quick summary. Similar to the last game where we only lost three wickets. However a better result for us... another win.

Batting first Hooper (71) Buckner (31) Booth (35) and McConnell (38) got us to 196. They started off well and at the halfway stage looked like winning. But that was before Saviour of the day Dave miller got into the groove. First 5 overs went for 23 runs but after 8 he had the figures of 4 wickets for 28runs. Ripping the heart out of the opposition. Dave McConnell was also at his wicket taking best 3 wickets for 54. In the end they just fell short on 183.

25th October - Third Game - Hospital
Unusual game where only 4 wickets fell all day. We batted first and hooper (86) and Buckner (69) dominated the batting on a pretty tough pitch to score from. We reached 191-2 and thought that a reasonable score.

However Hospital had a great start and their openers were very hard to dismiss. By the time they were removed it was too late and they Got home with an over or two to spare. Dave McConnell the only one to take wickets 2 for 28 off 8overs. Second loss.

18th October - Second Game - East Shirley blue
First win of the year. Batting first the usual suspects performed very well with the bat, especially good innings from Hooper (75), McConnell (79) and Craig Liken (37). Helped along by Buckner (17) Booth (26) and boreham (17*). Reaching the impressive total of 301 east Shirley Blue had a struggle on their hands.

They never really looked at getting the total although Carmichael batted for an impressive 79 runs. In the end they got to 154/7 and we were happy to get our first win under the belts. Best bowling was by Dave McConnell with 2 for 24 and especially tight bowling by Dave Boreham who took 3 for 14 of his 8 overs. On to the next game.

11th October - First game - East Shirley Gold
Pretty difficult game first up and not helped that we struggled a little with numbers. Put into the field first up we struggled to make headway into their batting lineup. Although new strike bowler Steve Ridley managed to grab an early wicket. Our bowlers toiled away as best we could but on a smallish ground we found it hard to restict their scoring. In the end they got to 289/3. Although we never really looked that in the hunt for the victory new Captain Dave McConnell put in a fantastic innings of 123 before being dismissed just before the end of the game. Other performances of note... Julian Marsh (26), Dave Boreham (19). We got to 200/8 in our 40 overs. All in all good to get out in the sunshine and hope to have an easier time in our next game.

29th September - NEW SEASON APPROACHES
Bit of a delay to the new season but shouldnt be long before we are out in the sunshine again.
