The idea for the team was formed in the Cave Rock hotel over a beer by Kevin, Tony McKendry, Lee Brown, John Monk etc about 1987. These guys all played for Sumner Suburban Cricket Assoc teams but as there was no equivalent "Old Mans" grade in CSCA so they applied with the SCC permission to join the CCA grade & were granted permission.
In the 1st 5 years or so the team was competitive & usually finished in the top 3 or 4 places in the competition. Also we had a very good social life & most Saturdays after the game as well as the compulsory beers at the club house of the team we played against, if it was an away game, it was always back to Sumner after. We had an annual tennis competition to finish off the season famously hosted by Malcolm & Joan Corbett (who had a grass tennis court). The tournament would start about 1.00am & often finished in the dark & if the games didn't finish in the dark the prize giving certainly did.
As time went by quite a few of the regulars stopped playing for various reasons( often just getting older) & we struggled to get numbers but carried on playing thanks to a lot of wring ins. About this same time Dave Boreham started the Sumner Misfits.(The original team had just been called the Sumner Presidents.) After a few years of competition in Presidents grade against each other the 2 teams joined forces as both were struggling for numbers.
Over the past couple of years the team spirit has rallied along with the amount of beer after the game .... which of course leads to greater player numbers. The team is really looking forward to carrying on the success we ended with last year.

15th March 2008 - Final Game v's Marist.
Two games in a row and we were playing Marist at Ilam park on a fine and sunny afternoon.
We batted first and due to some good bowling and a very very slow outfield we limped along at between 2-3 an over. No one made a large score but there were many contributions.
Most notable of these were Steve Booth (29), Bruce Buckner (25) and the pairing of Dave Boreham (30*) and Steve "windup" Ridley (19*). In the end we got to 146/6. Probably thinking that the score
wasnt high enough we went out into the field. Struggling yet again to get many early wickets It wasn't until Dave McConnell and David Miller both got two wickets in each of there overs that the flood gates opened.
Special mention to Dave Millar who not only had his best bowling of the season but took a nice catch (again his first of the season). Steve Booth was solid as a rock in the field and took three impressive catches. They crumbled to be all out for 99.
Over all it was a really good season for us 10 wins and only 7 losses. We look forward to carrying on next year.

March 2008 - Team Report
Given the beautiful summer that Christchurch has experienced it is remarkable how little cricket has been played. On the few occasions it has rained it has rained a lot, either close to or on the Saturday. In addition the team won one game by default and two other Saturdays will be lost because of the early advent of Easter. So even if the two remaining scheduled games are played the team will only have got on the park sixteen times.
The team has had a reasonable season, eight wins (including the win by default) and seven losses. Currently we are sixth out of twelve teams, three places ahead of where we finished last season.
There have been three distinct parts to the season. Out of the first seven games we won five. Then we had a five game losing streak. Finally we have won our last three games.
Individually, Garry Hooper and Dave McConnell have both scored over four hundred runs. Garry got most of his at the beginning of the season. Since then other players have kept running him out early in his innings. Dave has scored most of his since Christmas.
With the ball Garry has taken 17 wickets and Ross Gunn, who has bowled magnificently at times, 14. There have been several stand-out performances which are worth highlighting. They are Gareth Hammond’s 61 against Lancaster Park, 35 more than his previous highest score; Mat Harris’s 34 against Burnside again many more than he had ever previously scored in one innings; Dave McConnell’s 139no against OBC Blue and his 115no against Sydenham hospital (just last weekend); Garry Hooper’s 95 against Sydenham Hospital, Garry Hooper’s hat-trick against OBC Gold; and Ross Gunn’s four wickets against OBC Blue.
Our best wins have been against the two teams just ahead of us on the table, Sydenham Hospital and Sydenham Cardinals. The latter game was particularly memorable. Chasing just over 200 and with Garry Hooper run out early, our chances did not look good. However substantial contributions from Dave Boreham, Dave McConnell, Craig Liken and Steve Ridley saw us home with plenty of wickets and overs to spare.
I would like to acknowledge the contribution of two players who left for parts offshore during the season. Mat Harris left in early January for a year’s work experience in Germany. We hope to see him back in early 2009. I will never forget the day Mat resolutely held up one end while Garry Hooper scored all the runs at the other end to record a seemingly impossible win. Mat’s contribution of 4no in a partnership of about 100 was one of the great support innings of all time.
The other is Chris Collinson who returned to England a couple of weeks ago. Chris was a very steady bowler whose figures this season were not quite what he deserved. Unfortunately what was going to be his last game was rained out. However the team was able to suitably farewell him with a very enjoyable afternoon at the Valley Inn.
The team’s thoughts go out to Bruce Buckner whose wife, Karen, is not very well.
Finally the team’s regular wicket keeper, Bryce Williamson, sustained a serious knee injury on a tramping trip about 14 months ago. Consequently he has played very little cricket this season. We hope he will be available to play again on a regular basis next season.

8th March 2008 - Finally a game.
Well After missing the last three weeks of cricket due to bad weather and opposition withdrawles we managed to get a game in. Yay for us.
We played Sydenham hospital at St Leonards ( good to have a game at the home ground) and decided to bat first. Had a shaky start untill Dave McConnell came in and produced a fantastic innings.
Never looked in trouble in getting to 115 not out. Fantastic to watch and looks like he will have his own batting column on the site next year. (out goes Hoops).
Dave was surrounded by a number of little innings the best being Steve Booth who made 25 but looked all class. In the end we made 227 for 6.
So away we went bowling and struggled to get into their top order. but eventually we did and some tight bowling by Ross Gunn 7-2-29-2, Hoops 8-1-28-3 and Booth 5-0-25-2 in key parts of the game restricted
Sydenham to 218 for 9 after 40 overs. One more win for us - its been a good year. Two catches of note were Craig Liken and also Mike Ryan (who couldn't get his body out of the way in time). One more game to go.

9th Feb 2008 - Back to the winning ways.
Played OBC on the "longest day" at Barnett Park. Decided to bat first and what a good decision it was. Openers made a steady start with Steve Booth (32) showing some good form. Unlucky to get runout.
But the day belonged to Dave McConnell who didn't just tame the opposition bowling attack.... he killed it. Eventually making an unbeaten 137 with support by Dave Boreham (31) and Craig Liken (his runner for about the last 50 runs).
We knew it was our day when Craig caught an absolute stunner of a catch and then Ross Gunn (8-2-18-4) removed the entire top of the order. They were always in trouble and limped to 90 all out. Chris Collinson and Dave Boreham getting a couple of wickets each.
Special raps to the fielding effort. In total we caught 7 wickets which is unheard of for our team. We are looking forward to climbing the table now.

2nd Feb 2008 - YES A WIN
I didnt play this week so quick summary. Played Sydenham they got 201. We started badly losing Hoops for 4 then Dave Boreham (45) and Dave McConnell (69) resurected the innings.
Then following them a good effort by Craig Liken (41no) and Steve Ridley (21no). We got to their total with only 3 wickets down. Good to be back on track.

26th Jan 2008 - Not even close
Well we played the top team tis week (East Shirley gold) and found out why they are the best.
We batted first and got off to a bad started losing the openers quickly....then it got worse and worse... when we thought it couldn't possibly get any lower we had a batting collapse.
Before we knew it we were 34 for 7. Thankfully we had our secret weapons in Bill Swallow (41) and Ross Gunn(32) who saved complete embarrassment. Bill slaughtering their bowlings and hitting 4's all over the place.
He hit 5 of them from one over. We ended up with a small total of 116 all out.
Then they batted and easily got the runs with only a couple down. At least we know it will get easier next week.

19th Jan 2008 - Close but not quite.
Played St Albans this week and batted first. A bit of a mixed bag in the batting Bruce Buckner looked handy and made 26 odd, Dave McConnell made a half century (52) and pushed our score to 172 after 40 overs.
We did our best in the field but couldn't get the wickets we needed. Even though St Albans got the winning runs in the second to last over they always looked in control.

12th Jan 2008 - Tough Game.
Well the first game of the year brought us very warm weather and a game against Sydenham.
We were in the field first and did the best that we could in over 30 degree temperatures as well as Hoops in a grumpy mood (cheer up). But couldn't restrict them to under 200 runs on a lightning quick outfield.
In the end they reached 225/7 with Hoops (8-0-27-3) & Collinson (8-1-37) the best of our bowlers.
Our batting effort was off to a bad start losing our good batsmen cheaply. But a fantstic effort by Craig Liken (57) allowed us to climb above the hundred mark and let us retain a slight tiny piece of respect.
We managed to get to 132 all out. All in all it was a pretty tough day and we look forward to a happier time next week.

22nd December 2007 - Bad end to a good year.
The second round of matches began this weekend with us playing Riccarton again. (We lost against first up).
We batted first and lost Hoops before the end of the second over. On a tricky pitch to bat on we struggled to get any scoring momentum and
had to throw batt at ball in the last 10 overs to get a defendable score. We limped to 137/7 losing out strike bowler Ross Gunn along the way (back injury trying to score his first run for a while).
Good scores from Buckner (34) Booth (24) and McConnell (31).
We struggled to make many breakthroughs into their batting and always looked at coming up short they scored the winning runs with about 2 overs to spare.
Tight bowling by Hooper again (8-3-10-2). And special raps to Matt Harris who took a great stumping (his first) before he leaves the team for a year (heading to Germany for work).
So we will see Matt back in 2009 where he will have to earn his way back into the team.
Hoops bringing the beer next game.
MERRY XMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

8th December 2007 - Bump in the road
Played Burnside at Burnside park this week. They batted first and made our fielders explore the far reaches of the field. Bowlers did the best that they could
but the large and very quick outfield ment that any loose bowling was punished. The two highlights on the bowling side were Ross Gunn (7-0-30-3), and
Steve Ridley (OZ) (6-0-21-3). They reached a good total of 211/8.
Struggled from the outset when chasing and lost our top order very quickly (only one of our top 4 made above 10). Hoops made 30 opening and some good rear
guard batting from Steve Ridley (29). Matt Harris top scored with an impressive 34 and hasn't let us forget since. WELL DONE MATTY. We ended all out for 140.

1st December 2007 - One more win
The team is going through some unheard of success this year. Playing OBC Gold we batted first and made 177 for 5. Handy contributions from Hooper(47), Booth(39), McConnell(22) and Boreham(15) + Ridley(16) both not out.
Bowling second we struggled to get many early wickets and halfway through their innings we were all getting a little worried. But great bowling by Hooper(8-1-16-4) and Booth (8-1-29-3) ment they fell well short in the end.
All out for 133. Well after the game had finished we discovered that hoops had done a hatrick. I guess we were just too intent on the victory.
Dave Boreham happily bringing the beer next week.

24th November 2007 - Another win - We are on fire
I wasnt playing this week so this is rather short. Playing Mar Green they batted first and made 154/6. Batting second we managed to overhall them 8 down. Another good performance by gary Hooper with 66.
Mike Ryan is bringing the beer next week. Cheers.

17th November 2007 - We are On a roll
Another win for us this week. Playing Hospital at Barnett Park we managed to overhall their first innings total of 190/7 with an over to spare.
McConnell and Hooper both taking two wickets and very tight bowling by Booth (8-3-11-1) restricted them to under 200.
As usual Hoops was the star with the bat scoring 95 but also had good support from Buckner. Overall a satisfying win.
Thanks to Dave McConnell for bringing the beer next Saturday.

4th November 2007 - Another win
Quick note this week.
Bowling first we restricted East Shirley Blue to a respectable 160 for 7. Nice all round bowling performances by the team, even took our catches (okay just one).
Had another win last weekend. Good performances by Bruce Buckner (40) and Dave McConnell (47) with the bat. Nice cameos by Matt Harris and Steve Ridley helped us to reach the target set for us (161 for 5).
Team stats will be updated shortly.

27th October 2007 - Back to normal
Playing Lancaster Park Woolston on Saturday we started solidly with Bruce Bukner (18) and Gareth Hammond (61) seeing off the opening spell of bowlers.
Once Bruce was dismissed and the scoring rate was attempted to be raised wickets began to tumble. But good momentum by Booth (21) and McConnell (21) to give us a score that could be defended (144/8).
Again we struggled in the field and wasnt able to take many wickets. Dropped catches were everywhere so next week there will be a table on this page listing who has dropped the most.
In the end an easy win for the home team. We will look to improve next week.

20th October 2007 - FIRST WIN
Our first win came a lot faster than our first one last year. Playing Old boys (late again) at Barnett park we put them into bat first and yet again struggled to make many breakthroughs.
But consistant bowling from Hooper and Booth in combination with slightly selfish batting ment that they were restricted to only 160 after 40 overs. Should have been closer to 200 on a fantastic batting strip (prepared by our own Bruce Buckner).
Our batting effort started out by losing Bruce Bukner early on, but Gary Hooper (67), Steve Booth (16) and Dave McConnell (30) kept the score flowing fast. It was left to Craig Liken and Steve Ridley to fend off a young quick bowler (too fast even for his own team) and
take the team to an easy victory.
One of many victories to come. See below for the victory drinking. Big Ups for Ross bringing the beer next week. Thanks to Oz for the photo.

8th October 2007 - FIRST GAME REPORT
Well the first game was against Riccarton at hospital corner and sadly lost by 9 wickets.
We batted first and made a comfortable and steady start. With good starts to Hooper(32) & Booth(25). However when they departed an attempt to increase the run rate caused a bit of a mini collapse.
That was until Mike Ryan (11) & Ross Gunn (17) came in. They pushed the scoring up and allowed the team to get to a total of 107 for 6.
Didn't have the best start in the field and struggled to make an impact into the good Riccarton batting order. Chris Collinson the only wicket taker. Would have been more if catches had stuck.
In the end an easy victory for the Riccarton side. Still was nice to have a couple of beers after the game in great conditions.
