Sumner Cricket Club has an excellent programme for our budding junior Cricketers. We have about 10 teams catering for children aged 4 to 14. The youngest players start off in ‘Have a Go’. Here they learn the basic skills of catching, throwing, bowling and batting in a fun environment. They also walk away with a free give-away after each session. They use soft balls and plastic equipment so they can build their confidence in a safe environment. |

The next step up is Kiwi Cricket for 6-7 year olds. They also use soft balls but play a structured game each Saturday – 16 overs per innings. Teams consist of 8 players. The best thing about Kiwi Cricket is everyone gets to face the same number of balls, bowl the same number of balls and field in all the different positions. Players who get ‘out’ do not end their turn at bat. Games only last about 90 minutes which is perfect for the average attention span of these children. 8-9 year olds move up to the 20-20 grade. This is very similar to Kiwi Cricket but the innings are 20 overs so they get to bowl a few more balls and bat for a bit longer. Players then progress to hard ball cricket. This is generally at Year 5 level. The games are 25 overs per innings and, as a leather ball is used, full protective equipment is worn. The rules are very similar to normal Cricket. |
