Team reports will be added to this section throughout the season detailing how each grade is performing.

Sumner 1 (Senior One Day): Coaches - Julian Waghorn and James Leggat (before Christmas)

Sumner 1 are having a great season. They are playing Div 1 (Senior Mens) and only lost two games before Christmas. They are now playing against many High School teams and have won two and only lost one. They play together very well as a team. Jordan McGoverne and Daniel Stanley have moved up from Sumner 2 after Christmas as several players left to play for high school teams.
Four members of the team made the Canterbury zone development teams.
Daniel Stanley made the Canterbury team for Year Sevens.
Freddie Owens, Daniel Neumann and Liam Waghorn made the Canterbury emerging players team for Year Eights.

Sumner 2 (Junior One Day): Coaches - Grant Newton and Kelvin Mallard

The Sumner 2 Team has met with mixed results so far this season and with Jordan moving up a grade this side of Christmas, the senior players have had to step up a notch. Recently, Bradley, Neiden and Michael saw us through to 103 after being six wickets down for eight runs.
Tyler has performed well at the top of the batting order with most of the players taking a ‘one step back’ approach to putting their hand up to open. Olly has been our preferred opening bowler, bowling with good pace and accuracy throughout the season.
Josh continues to develop as an all rounder retiring on 21 earlier in the season and along with Neiden, Michael, Bradley, and Olly, was selected for one of the Canterbury Development/Emerging Player teams.
We have had four new players added to our team this year some of whom are playing their first season of cricket. Taylor, Jacob, Niall and Marcus have come along way and continue to improve with them all taking wickets and offering some of the best fielding in the team.
As the season draws to a close Kelvin and I hope to see everyone back next year to build further on this year’s progress.

Sumner 3 (Junior One Day): Coaches - Graeme Kearney and Phil Berry

After being almost unbeatable last season in 20/20 cricket, the boys made the big step up to hard ball cricket this season. They quickly learnt that the leather ball hurts! They had to learn to run with pads on. They learnt to wear two pairs of underwear so their box could be placed between the layers (and they also learnt that boxers don’t work). They had to learn to value their wicket as if you are out you are out in this grade.
The step up to hard ball cricket is a big one. It really is a different game altogether.
The adjustment took most of the first half of the season. The team only won one game before Christmas. They have started the second half of the season much more confidently and are unbeaten so far. The catching has been top shelf of late. In the last game there was not one catch spilled and three of them were stunners. The top batsman is Jack Kearney who is averaging 42. The top bowlers are George Berry and Jackson Murray who have both taken 6 wickets and are averaging about 12 runs per wicket.
The biggest improvers are Sam Summerfield (in his first season), Ed Hone, Aasha Mallard, Hamish Newton Vesty, Josh Friend and George Aitken. One name to look out for in the future is Joe Leggat who is bowling with great pace but no luck.

Sumner 4 (20/20): Coaches Caitlin Eves and Nicki Sullivan

On the whole, the overall performance of the team has improved immensely. It was evident when we first came back after the Christmas break, many of the players had been playing back yard cricket in the holidays and this resulted in a huge improvement in their batting and bowling skills.
Having Catlin Eves taking practises during the week has been invaluable due to her expertise in the Cricket world - playing at such a high level herself. Unfortunately she is unable to be at the games on Saturdays therefore with the help of parents scoring and umpiring on a whole the team is doing well. I'm not sure how many wins and losses we have had but would say about half and half.

Sumner 5 (20/20): Coach - Alan Cowie

Most of the players are 8 years old and the team is in a grade with most other teams made up of 9-10 year olds. They are generally winning against same age kids and have had some close losses to the older teams. In one game the teams ended up tied for runs so a wicket count back was done and Sumner 5 came out on top by two wickets.
The players are developing their skills really well. The fielding is tremendous. Bowling and batting are improving all the time. The team are just that - they are a ‘team’ with nobody really standing out all the time. All players are contributing really well. Last weekend they played the entire game in the rain.

Sumner 6 (20/20): Coaches - Phil Mayo and Martin Exon

The team are very talented. They have only lost two games all season. All players are contributing well. Isabella Brokenshire is the most improved player and has become the best bowler in the team. She took three wickets in one game.
The players are taking lots of great catches. Todd Mayo, Shilo Klein and Omar Cameron are doing well with the bat. Todd scored 26 in one game.
When game time comes around this team are really competitive with a strong desire to win. We have been amazed at the improvement in all of the players this season.

Sumner 7 (Kiwi): Coach - Simon Jerard

What a start! The coach and team didn’t know much about cricket. The kids couldn’t throw straight let alone catch a ball and Thursday practises were more like a rugby practise.
After 10 games what a change Jake taking a superb catch in mid field. James bowling someone out in every game. McGregor hitting the ball so hard the boys were able to take run six. We had Lucy join us for half the year (the only girl in the grade). Top effort Lucy. We can’t say we have won too many games but there have been many close ones but the kids and coach have developed over the season and now have a much better understanding of the game of Cricket and are making big efforts at practise in every respect. A massive high five to Canterbury Cricket and Graeme Kearney who invited the Sumner 7 and 8 teams to play at AMI Stadium during the Blackcaps vs England innings break. The kids were absolutely inspired and in awe of being cheered on by hundreds of spectators in front of the Hadlee stand. The kids will probably never forget that experience. A big thank you to all of the parents for such great support and also to Martin (Robbie and Dougal’s dad) for his fantastic BBQ skills during the big Sum 7 v Sum 8 clash. Keep up the great work Sumner 7. When the season is over, the midfield cones and the trees at Walter Park are really going to miss you.

Sumner 8 (Kiwi): Coaches - Sue Jennings and Dave Malcolm

This is a fantastic team of talented kids. They have won all but one game. Team work is very strong and the boys have grasped the basic skills very well. They are backing up and talking and calling well during batting. There have been some really high catches taken too.
The attitude of the kids at training is excellent.
Four of the players went to the One Day International between the Blackcaps and England at AMI Stadium. They played a game of Kiwi Cricket during the innings break and the atmosphere was incredible with thousands in the crowd cheering any time a player played a good shot or got a wicket. They players loved this experience.

Sumner Have a Go : Coaches – Matt Hoole & Ren Cameron

Have A Go for the 4-6 year olds has been a great success this year with up to 20 kids each week and the numbers holding up well right to the end of the season!
It looked like a tall order at the outset for myself and my co-pilot Ren, but with each week we’ve seen the skills of the kids improve beyond our wildest expectations! The kids obviously enjoy batting the most, but the way they have applied themselves to improve their catching, fielding and bowling as well as the general enthusiasm they display weekly is pretty inspirational!
Kids you should be really proud of what you’ve achieved this summer – I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have!
Parents – thanks to you all for your involvement and commitment and for keeping the numbers up! What a great set of kids – plenty of characters, bags of personality and a load of talent! Come back next season!
Thanks, Matt
